In To Kill a Mockingbird chapter four and five, Miss Maudie portrays the theme of appearance vs. reality because Scout describes her as widowed and poor. She also says Miss Maudie wears mens overalls, takes care of her flowers all day, and doesn't like her house, but she is really a nice regular lady who enjoys God's creations(56) Mrs. Maudie is a wise role model for Scout because she likes to keep to herself and respects the wishes of the Radleys(58-59). She is also one of the only women in the neighborhood. Miss Maudie and Atticus are similar because they both respect how the Radley's chose to live, they both like to mind their own business, and they are both well respected role models for Scout and Jem. Miss Maudie and Atticus are different because of the way the chose to teach the children what they believe is right. Their beliefs are also different. 4. I didn't find anything confusing in these chapters. 5. One example of racism in this chapter is when Miss Maudie says, " That is three-fourths colored folks and one fourth Stephanie Crawford"(60) because she is saying that colored people are not as smart as white people. 6. One example of a metaphor in chapter four is "Summer was Dill"(45). This is a metaphor because Dill isn't actually the summer, but summer is used to described Dill.
