2. “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. “Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 119). One day in Maycomb, a mad dog went walking down the streets. Calpurnia saw the mad dog and ran to Atticus, who comes back with the sheriff. He brings a rifle & asks Atticus to shoot the animal. Atticus hits the dog with only one shot. Atticus later gets Scout and Jem shot guns, this is when he was the quote above. It means that you can shoot any of the birds you want, as long as its not a Mockingbird. This is because all mockingbirds do is make music for us. They don’t eat peoples gardens, and they don’t nest in peoples corncribs, just make music. I think “killing a Mockingbird” symbolizes messing with Boo Radley. This is the same for in todays society when people mess/hurt people who they assume are one thing but are really innocent people. But referring to this book, I think that Boo Radley represents the “Mockingbird”. People try to mess with and tear apart Boo Radley, when all he is doing is whats good for other people. For example, he fixed Jem’s pants, and covered Scout with a blanket. This is why I think the “Mockingbird” represents Boo Radley.
4. One thing I found confusing is why they just had to kill the mad dog. Why couldn’t they call someone or something for it?
5. Foreshadowing: Later in the book, Boo Radley could be killed possibly, representing “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
6. Similie: “Did she die free” asked Jem. “As the mountain air,” said Atticus.

Miss Maudie says it is a sin to kill a mocking bird because they don't hurt anything and the make beautiful music for us. It would be a sin to a mockingbird because they are peaceful and there is not many of them, it is ok to kill a bluejay though because there is more of them and they get into stuff they shouldn't be in. I think the mockingbird symbolizes innocence because they don't harm anything, the other symbolism of innocence was Boo and Atticus and Miss Maudie would get mad at Jem and Scout for spying on him and making fun of him, much like they would be upset if Jem or Scout killed a mockingbird.

1. Colton Paulson - Period 3 2. Miss Maudie says that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. She says this because mockingbirds don't do anything but sing for us. They never do anything bad, so it would be bad if you killed one. I think Miss Maudie wants Scout to know that Boo is like a mockingbird. He never does anything bad, so why does everyone make up such bad rumors about him? Why is everyone afraid of him? I think killing a mockingbird in today's society might symbolize people being stereotypical or racist. In court, some people my be accused of something they didn't do. This may be due to that person's race or what they have done in the past. But, maybe none of that has anything to do with why they are in court. 4. I didn't find anything confusing in these chapters. 5. Racism comes up in this chapter because a lot of people make fun of Atticus for defending an African American. 6. Jem's money was burning up his pockets is a metaphor because it means that he has a lot of money. (p. 134)

Miss Maudie says that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because the Mockingbird does nothing but sing music for everyone. They don't steal food or make annoying noises. They need harm anyone and should be left alone. She says this when Jem and Scout get their guns, and he is telling them to be careful with them, and that they can shoot any bird but a mockingbird. I think killing a mockingbird represents hurting someone (either emotionally or physically) who do nothing but try to make people happy. People "Kill mockingbirds" in today's society by casting out people who are different and seem scary, when in reality, they do nothing to hurt anyone. This is an example of appearance vs. reality. I think that in this story, Boo Radley is an example of a mockingbird. He leaves people alone and is actually a very nice person, but since he is different, people shoot him down and kill his spirits.

When Miss Maudie says that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird, she is relating the mockingbird to something that's innocent. Mockingbirds don't do anything to harm us. They don't attack us or do anything to provoke us. To kill a mockingbird would be meaningless. It would be wrong to kill a person without reason, just like it's wrong to kill a mockingbird without reason. That's what Miss Maudie is trying to say. In today's society, people "kill mockingbirds" all the time. Doing something potentially harmful without reason is killing a mockingbird. There is no excuse for it. It is just done for the sake of doing it. One example of appearance vs. reality was when Mrs. Dubose was dying, but everybody thought she was just mean. A literary element from these chapters was metaphor, because I don't think that the mockingbirds represent solely mockingbirds.

I think miss Maudie means that why kill something that dent do anything to you. I think it symbolize the radleys because they are doing nothing wrong they are only trying to help the kids but the towns people think the radlyes are mean and weird but they are only trying to help. Today people might say lies about people to make themselves feel good and other people believe them and then a lot of stuff just start happening and every ones making fun of that person but in reality that stuff might not be any where to the truth so that person that did nothing wrong is now getting made fun of by other people that dint even know for sure if its true or not

Ellie Manning Period 5 TKAMB Prompt
Miss Maudie says it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. Why does she say this? What might “killing a mockingbird” symbolize? Where do people “kill mockingbirds” in today’s society?
Miss Maudie says it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. She says this because they don't hurt anybody. In fact, (pg.119) it says how they don't eat up people's garden, don't nest in corncribs, and they sing pretty music to us. They don't do any harm to you or to anyone.Killing a mockingbird can symbolize a lot of different things. It symbolizes people who are treated poorly. Also, how they get hurt and killed through their innocence. It's destroying their innocence. Boo Radley is a example of this-he's innocent who has been destroyed through rumors. In today's society, people kill mockingbird because we jump to conclusions. Some people are still racist. If a black person where to come to court because of getting blamed for a robbery or drug dealing, some automatically think guilty. Even though these black people are completely innocent, others go by their first reaction. Sometimes they do that, but it might not even be the black mans fault. He didn't harm anyone yet he still gets pinned. 4) One thing I found confusing was why didn't Atticus want anyone to know he could shoot so well? 5) Innocence vs. Reality. Scout thinks that Atticus is feeble and old, to old he couldn't shoot well. In reality, Atticus has a great shot, which could kill a dog with one shot. 6) Setting-the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place. We know that this is taking place in Maycomb, Alabama.

Edgar Villalobos 3rd "Mockingbirds" don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us." (page 119) When you kill a mockingbird i think it means to hard someone who is innocent that did nothing wrong, Mockingbirds never hurt any one and niether do the people represented as mockingbirds.I found nothing confusing. Appearance vs. Innocence because of mrs dubose seamed bad but it was her morphine addiction. Forshadowing because the mockingbird quote might be about tom robinson

1.Celine Khoury 5th hour 2&3. The kids were told that it was a sin to kill a mockingbird. This is because mockingbirds represent innocence and grace. Miss Maudie said that they sing for us and never harm us. They have no reason to. All they do is go on with there life and make music. I think to "kill a mockingbird" represents blaming and innocent person. Or killing some one for something that they were incorrectly blamed for. Which will show up later in the book. 4. I have no confusions. 5. a theme is appearance vs. reality. this is because some one can be wrongly accused for something that they didn't do when in reality they were going among their own business, like the mockingbirds. 6. A literary term would be foreshadowing. It shows foreshadowing because someone might get wrongly blamed for something that they didnt do and might even lose their life because of it.
